Known to many simply as Sister Wendy, Wendy Beckett (Art History/1930- ) is a British nun famous for her work as a historian of art. At the age of sixteen, Beckett entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a Catholic congregation of consecrated virgins devoted to education. For most of her adult life, Sister Wendy lived as a hermit translating Medieval Latin texts; however, in 1980 she began pursuing her interest in art and eventually went on to publish several books on the topic. With this background, Sister Wendy was afforded the opportunity to host several documentaries for the BBC throughout the 1990s, through which she reached widespread fame and appreciation.
